This is the 34th volume in the SOMM label’s acclaimed “Beacham Collection” series. The opening “Bacchanale” is a live recording from Beacham’s final concert in London. Despite being just five days shy of his 81st birthday, he delivered a powerful performance at a blistering tempo—6 minutes and 28 seconds—ranking among the fastest in history. The finale is incredibly intense, and the recording captures the audience’s immediate, thunderous applause. Saint-Saëns was a composer Beecham particularly enjoyed conducting, and this recording features his performance of the Cello Concerto No. 1 with the Ukrainian-born, London-based cellist Chernyavsky. Beecham recorded *Scheherazade* for HMV (later EMI, now Warner) on March 17–19 and 28, 1957, and this recording is still highly regarded today. The recording on this disc is a live concert recording made between those studio sessions. While the interpretation is nearly identical to the studio version, the slightly faster tempo in the first two movements conveys the energy of a live performance. Naxos Japan
