Johann Darfit Heinichen studied law at the University of Leipzig and qualified as a lawyer; he remained in the legal profession until 1709, but after publishing a treatise on the basso continuo in 1710, he went to Italy to study. He broadened his musical horizons and in 1716 was appointed court conductor to Augustus, "the Strong King" of Dresden. He left more than 20 religious cantatas in German, but they vary widely. Some have austere chorale movements, others are gorgeous arias reminiscent of opera, and still others are lyrical and idyllic in their depiction of nature, with soloists, chorus, and orchestra working in unison.
