The 500th anniversary of the Bavarian State Orchestra and the 100th anniversary of the birth of Sawallisch. First CD release of Elijah's legendary live recordings! To commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Bavarian State Orchestra, a CD project from the rich archives of the Bavarian State Opera has been launched. The first selection is the historic live performance of "Elijah" on July 4, 1984. It was the opening performance of the Munich Opera Festival and was conducted by Munich-born Savarisch, the general director of the theater at the time. The dream cast, including Fischer-Dieskau in the title role, was superbly led in a magnificent performance. The orchestra's 1000th subscription concert in 1986 and the NHK Symphony Orchestra's 75th anniversary concert in 2001 were also special occasions when Sawallisch performed "Elijah," indicating that this work was one of his "winning pieces". The 1968 recording with the Gewandhaus Orchestra has long been considered a masterpiece, but this live recording from his home base in Munich will be of great interest on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth and the 10th anniversary of his death.
