This is an album of works by William Byrd, revered as the "Father of Britannian Music," performed by the choir "Alamire" led by David Skinner. The previous recording of "BYRD1588" (INV1006) of "Psalms, Sonnets, Sorrows and Pious Songs," published in 1588, was highly acclaimed as the first complete recording of this collection, and this album features the complete set of songs from three to six voices composed the following year. The works are written for all players, amateur and professional alike, who will enjoy the various thematic combinations of the viol consort (an ensemble of viola da gamba) and the exquisite polyphonic voices. The choir "Alamire," led by David Skinner, is currently working on a project to perform and record English church music from the 15th century to the 1930s.
