Description:

This is the seventh recording of #bruckner2024, an initiative of the CAPRICCIO label and the International Bruckner Society to record all Bruckner symphonies in their entirety by 2024, the 200th anniversary of Bruckner's birth. This time, the first draft of No. 8 will be recorded based on the Paul Hawkshaw edition, which was just published in 2022. Bruckner began work on the Eighth Symphony in the summer of 1884. The premiere of No. 7 in December of the same year was a great success, and he completed No. 8 (first draft) in August 1887 with growing confidence. He entrusted the premiere to Hermann Levi, who had successfully premiered No. 7 in Munich, but Levi declined after examining the score. Shocked, Bruckner began a complete revision and completed the second draft in 1890. It was premiered in 1892 to great acclaim, but the first draft was buried in the shadows. On May 2, 1954, the 130th anniversary of Bruckner's birth, Eugen Jochum conducted the premiere of the first movement of the first draft, but the complete work had to wait until September 2, 1973 (conducted by Hans Hubert Schoenzeller) for its premiere, and even then the first draft did not "become a civil right The first and second drafts of the work were not released until September 2, 1973. The difference between the first and second drafts is significant: the first draft ends the first movement strongly with a coda of three forte movements, while the second draft ends with a breathless conclusion.Although the trio of the scherzo is based on the same motif, the music has been completely revised. In the adagio and finale of the second draft, some passages from the first draft have been deleted. Conducted by Poschner, the performance time is 82:06 for the first draft and 76:12 for the second draft. Although many people find the second draft "more coherent," the first draft is Bruckner's first conclusion and is rich in the vision he intended to portray. The first recording of the first draft by the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Inbal (1982) brought the first draft to international attention, and several recordings have been made since then, all based on the Novak edition published in 1972. According to Hawkshaw, there are some differences in the textual details and articulations between his edition and the Novak version. Naxos Japan
