The opera (serenata) "Angelica" by Nicola Porpora, one of the leading composers of the Neapolitan school of music, was composed as an occasion music to celebrate a festive event at the court, and its libretto was the first work of the playwright Metastasio, as well as the first work by him. It is also known as the first work by the playwright Metastasio and the debut of Carlo Broschi, a castrato who later gained fame as "Farinelli". The music of Porpora, who was considered a rival of Handel's during his London period and studied under Haydn during his Vienna period, is full of gorgeous colors and rich musical ideas.
