Complete first release! Oscar Shumsky, born in Philadelphia in 1917, was one of the few American-born star violinists of the mid-20th century, when the American music scene was dominated by performers who had made their names in Europe and then immigrated. At the age of seven, he performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Stokowski and studied with Leopold Auer at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music, He was once invited by Toscanini to join the NBC Symphony Orchestra. Although Shumsky had been a well-known figure in Europe, his debut recital in London in 1981 was so well received that he was inundated with requests for concerts in Europe, and a series of recordings were released by Nimbus, ASV, Chandos, and others. This recording was made two days after a concert in Maar, Germany, in the fall of 1984, but for some reason its existence has remained unknown. In recent years, Eric, Shumsky's son, discovered the unedited tapes while sorting through his father's estate. Together with Eric Wen (now Biddulph), who had arranged his father's London debut, Shumsky edited and approved the tapes, and now they are being released. Schumsky has recorded Brahms' chamber music and Hungarian Dances, but this is the only recording of the complete violin concerto.This is a rare release that fills a void in the discography. In addition to the song titles, a two-page memoir by Eric Shumsky is included in the commentary (in English only).
