Description:
Graupner's fourth Passion Cantata is the cantata "The Sufferings of Jesus" performed on "Laetare Sunday" in 1747. On this day, the fourth Sunday of Lent, "the time of atonement is a little lessened, and the joy of the solemn hour is approaching," and people can enjoy a bit of a release. However, Lichtenberg, who wrote the text of this cantata, focuses on the argument between the ruler and the judge about Jesus, and ends up portraying Jesus who is devastated by the result. The entire cantata is composed in accordance with the story, and a powerful story is depicted. The choral works on "The Passion," selected from Graupner's entire oeuvre, are masterpieces that reveal Graupner's extraordinary compositional technique, from the free use of each instrument to the individual songs. Florian Hierlik and the Mannheim Hofkapelle Baroque Orchestra gave a superb performance of this work. Naxos Japan
