Description:
Stanford is an Irish-born composer. Not only did he contribute greatly to the development of English choral works, but he also left behind many beautiful works incorporating his country's folk songs, including seven symphonies and the "Irish Rhapsody". The eight string quartets, however, are rarely performed, and most of them have never been recorded. The Dante Quartet, a talented ensemble active mainly in the United Kingdom, has begun recording all of Stanford's string quartets, and the first collection (SOMMCD0160) shows off their excellent performance. In this second collection, the quartet performs Nos. 3, 4, and 7. The classical idiom of these works is full of romanticism and nostalgia, and they are all very appealing. Naxos Japan
