ASCHEN, a melodic black metal duo from Spain: Debut Album Lyrical melodies combined with aggressive and dynamic song structures—a magnificent fusion of destruction and beauty A black metal duo from the Basque Country, Spain. This project was launched in 2022 by Mikel Telletxea (vocals, guitar, programmed drums) and Igor Valle (bass; ex-Dominium, ex-Killing for Business). With this lineup, they recorded and independently released a self-titled demo in February 2023. Shortly thereafter, Atauzz (Korkut, Kurkuma, 2Sonte) joined as bassist, replacing Igor. With this new lineup, in August 2025, the band recorded and mixed their debut album at Atala Studios in Spain (used by Infest, Willis Drummond, Belako, and others). Mastering was handled by Toni Lindgren at Fascination Street Studios in Sweden (which has worked with Dimmu Borgir, Katatonia, Kreator, and others). While rooted in old-school black metal, the band has developed a unique sound that naturally fuses various musical styles. A striking feature of their sound is the dynamism of their song structures. Constant rhythmic shifts, destructive riffs, melodic passages, and explosive blast beats evoke a powerful and profound spectrum of emotions. While the lyrics are primarily sung in English, the band also incorporates Basque, the native language of their ancestors. Distancing themselves from traditional themes such as Satanism and Paganism, they delve deeply into humanity’s inability to understand and confront its own inner conflicts, and how this failure ripples out to a society in decline and a suffering natural world. The artwork, created by founding member Mikel Telletxea, reflects this inner journey. It depicts an infinite labyrinth of paths tracing fingerprint-like patterns—an image that seems to float between the macrocosm (the greater universe) and the microcosm (the smaller universe). This album expresses an endless inner quest that pursues both the meaning of life and the order hidden within the universe.
