A live recording from Sweden during the very final years of Giulini’s career. This performance makes the style of Giulini’s later period crystal clear. The Franck recording is from a live performance three years after the 1993 Sony release. At a slow tempo that feels as though it might grind to a halt at any moment, he renders every minute detail with meticulous precision. While Giulini’s sense of rhythm was sometimes unclear when he was not at his best, this performance—perhaps due to the tension inherent in its slow tempo—boasts a powerful impact. Particularly noteworthy is the coda of the finale, which features remarkable emphasis. The bright tone, melancholic atmosphere, and lyrical expression can be said to embody the characteristics of both Franck—who sought to fuse German and French music—and Giulini himself. “The Sea” is also renowned as one of his favorite works, and since this live recording took place on the same day as the Franck performance, the artistic direction is consistent; it is moving to witness how the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra masterfully meets the maestro’s exacting demands. The liner notes by Jean-Yves Bra, a biographer of Giulini who also served for many years as a director at France’s National Radio, are also highly valuable. Tobu Land System
