"Bach for Today," performed on Orgelpark’s new masterpiece, faithfully crafted in the style of Hildebrandt This is the second installment in the “In Praise of Bach” series by internationally acclaimed organist Rie Hiroe, following the highly acclaimed first volume (R-Resonance/RRSC-20012). It is a heartfelt album featuring a collection of J.S. Bach’s most substantial organ works from his middle period. Recorded on the Baroque organ at Orgelpark in the Netherlands—a faithful reproduction of the style of the master organ builder Zacharias Hildebrandt (1688–1757), whom Bach held in high esteem—this album captures the sound of “Bach for Today,” a fusion of historical timbre and cutting-edge technology. This album vividly illuminates Bach’s diverse musical world—including Fantasies and Fugues, Preludes and Fugues, and chorale works—through Hiroe’s meticulous and rich expression. The booklet includes a list of dispositions and registrations. Graduated from Toho Gakuen School of Music with a major in piano and completed a master’s program in organ at the Tokyo University of the Arts. Received scholarships from the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) and the Asahi Foundation for the Arts to study abroad at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media and the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts, where she completed master’s and soloist programs. She studied organ under Tsuguo Hirono, Ulrich Bremsteller, and Ludger Roman. She was the first Asian to win the prestigious International Organ Competition at Chartres Cathedral in France. She has received numerous awards, including top prizes at the Odense and Musashino International Competitions. After touring the world with recitals based in Germany, he has been engaged in educational activities as the Head of the Organ Department at the Tokyo University of the Arts since 2008, while continuing to perform both domestically and internationally. He possesses a wide-ranging repertoire spanning from the Renaissance and Baroque periods to the present day, and is consistently highly acclaimed for his unwavering technique and his sensitivity that breathes life into the works. Furthermore, his students have gone on to become organists active on the world stage. To date, he has released “Musik für die Seele” (Gratiaclassic, 2006), “The Sound of the Garnier Organ” (Tokyo University of the Arts Press, 2014), “Odean BACH: In Praise of Bach—Organ Works from J.S. Bach’s Youth” (R-Resonance, 2021; “Record Geijutsu” Special Selection), and “Preghiera: Prayers—Franz Liszt: Organ Works” (R-Resonance, 2024; “Asahi Shimbun” Recommended Release). He has appeared on NHK-BS Premium’s “Classic Club” and NHK-FM’s “Best of Classic.” He is frequently invited from abroad to serve as a judge for international competitions and as a masterclass instructor. He is a professor at the Tokyo University of the Arts, principal organist at the German Evangelical Church Kreuzkirche Tokyo-Yokohama, and vice president of the Japan Organists Association. ALTUS
