Description:

Unknown German Classical Music! Volume 4 of "Weimar Classics"! The fourth volume of "Weimar Classics," a series introducing classical music influenced by German classical literature (Weimar Classics), features "Faust" by Franz Karl Adalbert Eberwein (1786-1868), which was composed at the direct request of Goethe himself. appeared. This world-first revival recording reveals Eberwein's work to be a mirror of the musical spirit of Goethe's time, and this recording is a musicological achievement that goes far beyond the joy of successfully uncovering music from the past. (Karl Eberwein was the brother of Traugott Maximilian Eberwein (1775-1831), whose work is featured in Volume 2.) It is surprising that Eberwein's music has since fallen into oblivion, as the records of Weimar's court theater show that there were 40 performances of the work between 1829, when it was completed, and 1873. The simplicity of song-like tunes such as "Mephistopheles' Serenade" has the folkloric tone of Zelter's Berlin Lieder school, while the romanticism of Mendelssohn and Weber is evident in the orchestral music. Perhaps most interestingly, Wagnerian tones can be found in the music of the introduction and the song of the nymphs of the earth.(In 1829, Wagner had written only piano sonatas and other studies.) Listening to this work, it is clear that German Romanticism shaped the sound of Eberwein's "Faust". Tokyo M-Plus
