Chochieva sings with astonishing transparency in this album in honor of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Scriabin and Mozart. Russian pianist Chochieva has skillfully combined the works of Scriabin, whom she has loved to play and listen to since she was a child, and Mozart in this remarkable program. Zlata Chochieva was born in Moscow in 1985 and was accepted and taught by Pletnyov at the age of 14. She studied with Nelsekiyan at the Moscow Conservatory from 2008 and with Jacques Louvier at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg from 2012. He currently teaches at the Mozarteum. Chotieva says there are countless similarities, including "phrasing and the absence of extra notes." Her playing is full of surprisingly clear tones and rich songs. She makes us feel no sense of the more than 100-year gap in time and region between Mozart and Scriabin, and lets us hear the "song" in their music in its purest form. There is no sense of technical difficulty at all. Scriabin's Sonata No. 3 is technical, while No. 10 is mysterious. Also, Mozart's variations are clearly shaded from piece to piece.The "chiaroscuro" in the title refers to the method of shading in paintings, and indeed Chochieva's music is well received, with a superb program in which various contrasts are highlighted, the compositional power of each piece, and above all, a rich "song" throughout.
