New recording of the opera "The Philosopher's Stone, or The Magic Island," considered the forerunner of Mozart's masterpiece "The Magic Flute" Artistic Director Rüdiger Lotter's ensemble, Hofkapelle Munich, has recorded one of the outstanding operas based on history, "The Philosopher's Stone, or The Magic Island. This opera is considered a precursor to Mozart's masterpiece "The Magic Flute," and the libretto was written by Emanuel Schikaneder, who would later also write the libretto for "The Magic Flute. It was premiered on September 11, 1790, nine months before the first performance of "The Magic Flute" took place, at the Wieden Theater outside Vienna, with Sikaneder and three other composers listed as co-composers, Frank Xaver Gerl, Benedikt Schack and Johann Baptiste Hanneberg. In contrast, Mozart was not initially listed in the score as the composer of the opera. It was only later, when Mozart's name was rediscovered in 1996 in the transcriptions of the two parts of the finale and the score above the duet "Come, my dear maid, go with me," that the composer of all the pieces was revealed.The many musical and stylistic parallels between many parts of The Philosopher's Stone and similar scenes from The Magic Flute show that Mozart drew inspiration for the opera from the ideas of himself and all the other participants.
