Hemsing, who continues to forge her own unique path, performs Bruch’s famous concerto—a work she has performed throughout her career. Norwegian violinist Eldbjorg Hemming’s latest album, *Bruch: Violin Concerto*, is being released by Sony Classical (available only on vinyl and as a digital download; there are currently no plans for a CD release). Recorded with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of conductor Gergely Madarás, this album features Hemsing—known for her innovative approach to repertoire—performing Max Bruch’s “Violin Concerto No. 1” as the centerpiece, along with “Romance,” and a newly arranged version of the art song “In the Night” for solo violin and orchestra. Max Bruch (1838–1920) is one of the leading composers of the German Romantic period, known for his beautiful melodies. A contemporary of Brahms, he is also known in Japan as the mentor of Kōsaku Yamada. Furthermore, his interactions with renowned violinists such as Joachim and Sarasate served as a major inspiration for the creation of his numerous violin works. True to Bruch’s words—“The violin can sing melodies more beautifully than the piano, and melody is the very soul of music”—his “Violin Concerto No. 1” is a masterpiece that allows listeners to fully savor his unparalleled melodic beauty. This recording also represents the culmination of Hemsing’s lifelong journey with this concerto, a work she has engaged with since childhood. She first performed this piece as a child with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and has continued to perform it over the years. “Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 is a work that will stay with me throughout my life. I have grown up with this piece. Over the many years I have spent with it, this work has revealed to me a truly diverse range of colors, emotions, and layers of meaning.
