World premiere recording of a work dedicated to Dvorak is also included! A collection of string quartets by Czech composer Karel Kovajovics! The Stamitz Quartet performs a wide range of repertoire from baroque to contemporary music. The Stamitz Quartet has made several ambitious recordings for the Sprafon label, including the string quartets by Ferstel (SU4050) and Gubaidulina (SU4078). This disc features three string quartets by Karel Kovajovics (1862-1920), a Czech composer active from the mid-19th to the early 20th century. This is the world premiere recording! Kovajovics studied conducting, composition, clarinet, and piano at the Prague Conservatory, and also received private instruction in voice and composition from Sdeněk Fibív. As a conductor, he performed in the early concerts of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra from 1896-98, and in 1900 he became director of opera at the National Theater. His work at the National Theater was his most significant contribution to Czech music, and he gave numerous performances there, including the premiere of Dvořák's opera Rusalka. As a composer, he had already gained fame before becoming a conductor, with successes in the opera "The Bridegrooms" and the ballet "Hashish."The three string quartets recorded here were composed between the 1870s and the 1990s.
