Beautiful Harmony with the Sound and Sensibility of Armenian TraditionThis "Requiem" by Tigran Mansourian (1939-), one of Armenia's leading contemporary music composers, is dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide in Turkey between 1915 and 1917, with the sound and sensitivity of tradition, The text of the requiem is in Latin. It is a milestone work for Mansourian. The essence of the problem is the existence of certain differences in the reading of religious texts between the Armenian Church and the Roman Catholic Church. The psychology of believers in a country that has not been an independent state for a long time is very different from the psychology of believers living in a nation that has been independent for centuries with a strong religion behind it. From an Armenian psychological point of view, the intonation chanted by the "Kyrie Ereison" in the works of Bach and Beethoven is very different from that of a prayer. So we had a careful discussion in deciding who would sing the Requiem. The singers must have the same psychology and personality as the figures depicted in the ancient Armenian manuscripts. And at the same time, I was very adamant about the Latin liturgical texts.It is a very beautiful piece of music," said Mansourian. Combining both classical and contemporary musical styles, Eastern and Western liturgical language sensibilities, this epic monument to human tragedy is filled with beautiful sounds that will deeply soothe those who have been wounded by the ever-present conflict.
