Now, the final installment—Symphonies Nos. 6–9—is finally here. This recording project, which has been running in tandem with the Savall Beethoven Symphony Cycle concert series that began in June 2019, has finally come to a close. Following Beethoven, Schubert is reportedly next on the schedule. Savall’s spirit of inquiry and musical world know no bounds! While Beethoven symphonies performed on period instruments are no longer a rarity these days, it is worth noting once again how the unique timbre of the period instruments played by the members of the Concert des Nations truly stands out. In the “Pastoral” Symphony as well, the wind instruments’ interpretation—particularly the sound of the winds and timpani during the “storm”—is truly magnificent. The string section’s light yet driving performance in Symphony No. 7 is also magnificent. And above all, the Ninth! Even in the final movement, every single passage played by the instrumentalists emerges with high precision down to the finest details, while coming together as a single, beautiful sound. The vocal ensemble, much like the instrumental sound, captivates the listener with its soft, precise ensemble work and balance. This performance can be seen as the answer to the image of Beethoven that Savall and the musicians—who have, in a sense, lived through “music history”—have arrived at. It’s a must-hear!
