Capella Amsterdam, led by Daniel Rois, makes its debut on the PENTATONE label. The ensemble is releasing an album that alternates between motets by Jacques de Werth and Wolfgang Rihm’s *Seven Passions*. Born in Flanders, the heartland of Renaissance music, Jacques de Werth (1535–1596) spent most of his life in Italy. He left behind music that masterfully bridges the gap between traditional polyphonic style and the new style pioneered by Monteverdi. Characterized by a distinctive and dramatic style, the motets included here combine highly sophisticated and intricate polyphonic techniques with a sincere beauty that speaks directly to the heart. Contemporary composer Wolfgang Rihm (1952–) is known as a prolific composer who has created over 500 works to date. *Seven Passions* is a collection filled with soft yet mystical harmonies reminiscent of medieval meditative prayer music. Liem’s original sonic world is a highlight of this recording. Capella Amsterdam is a prestigious ensemble founded in 1970.
