The fifth release under the exclusive Moser PENTATONE label contract is a collection of cello works by Mendelssohn's sister and brother! This SACD hybrid disc features Mendelssohn's cello works on an 1837 fortepiano. Johannes Moser, a cellist of international renown, is the fifth release under his exclusive contract with PENTATONE label, featuring the cello works of Mendelssohn's sister and brother! Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel (1805-1847), two years older sister of Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847), married Wilhelm Hensel, a court painter. She was a female composer who left 400 pieces of piano music, chamber music, songs, and orchestral music during her lifetime, and was a great influence on her younger brother, Felix. This album includes Felix Mendelssohn's two famous cello sonatas and concerto variations (these works were dedicated to his brother Paul Mendelssohn (1812-1874)), a mute for cello and piano (dedicated to the female cellist Liza Barbier Cristiani (1827-1853)), and the Assaira (dedicated to the female cellist Liza Barbier Cristiani (1827-1853)), and Assai Tranquillo. The works by Fanny Mendelssohn, on the other hand, include a fantasy and a capriccio.In this recording, Alasdair Beatson plays an 1837 Erard fortepiano. The use of an instrument from the time of Mendelssohn's composition is also noteworthy, and Moser and Beatson play well together. Moser has also recorded the Dvorak & Lalo Cello Concertos (KKC 5651/PTC 5186488), the Russian Album (KKC 5711/PTC 5186594), the Elgar Cello Concerto & Variations on a Rococo Theme by Tchaikovsky (KKC 5765/ PTC 5186570), Lutoslawski & Dutilleux's Cello Concerto (PTC 5186689), which have been highly acclaimed by various magazines, including the Record Art Special Recording Award.
