Bernstein, Leonard (1918-1990)

Description:

Enjoy Bernstein's late performances on Blu-ray Leonard Bernstein Box Vol. 220 Leonard Bernstein, one of the greatest conductors of the century. This is the second box set following the "Leonard Bernstein 100th Anniversary DVD Box" (74-30008) released in 2018, which celebrated the 100th anniversary of his birth. This time, the content focuses on concert footage and is available in a Blu-ray box; BD1 includes Sibelius with the Vienna Philharmonic, which reflects Bernstein's artistic style in his later years. Normally, Sibelius has a Scandinavian sound, but Bernstein's performance has a high voltage with a lot of enthusiasm, and the Vienna Philharmonic's rich sound and abundant expression give it a different appeal from Sibelius played by Scandinavian orchestras. BD2 is Beethoven's String Quartet No. 16 (string ensemble version), which was performed by the Vienna Philharmonic at a memorial concert for Karajan held one year before Bernstein's death. The work is also known for the influence of the music of the third movement Lento on the final movement of Mahler's Symphony No. 3, and the Adagio, which exceeds 10 minutes, is particularly moving. The coupling is Haydn's Mass No. 7, "Mass in Time of War," recorded in 1984 at the Cathedral Basilica of Otto Boelen, a World Heritage Site in Germany.BD3 includes three Haydn symphonies and a concerto symphony with soloists from the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, which he composed in the early 1980s when he had a close relationship with the orchestra. The performances are full of vitality and dynamism, and the beautiful and rich tone of the Vienna Philharmonic is used to portray Haydn's image full of life. Bernstein's passionate conducting is a real pleasure to enjoy on film. (1/2) King International
