Description:
Karl Böhm (1894-1981) live at the 1968 Salzburg Festival in stereo. Beethoven's Beethoven No. 2, which he was particularly fond of performing in his later years. This piece was also Böhm's last appearance at the Salzburg Festival, and his balance of knowledge, emotion, and intention, without exaggeration, is superb. Stravinsky was a composer that Böhm had actively included in his programs since his Munich days (1921-27). The "Firebird" is well known from the live recording with the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1963 (AU95591) and the Japan tour with the VPO in 1975, and we are glad to have another source from the 1960s, when Böhm was at his most productive.
