The performance of Mussorgsky's opera "Boris Godunov," an unusual BIS program that rarely features operas, surprised me twice. However, the Goteborg Symphony Orchestra, which has a close relationship with BIS, performs the opera, and the 1869 original version of the masterpiece "Boris Godunov" is also rare, so the performance is full of the label's character. Mussorgsky completed "Boris Godunov" in 1869 and submitted it to the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre Committee, but it was rejected. The main reason for the rejection was that the characters were all male, and the opera was considered to be a masculine historical tragedy that would not be well received because it lacked the heroine's charm and the tragic love between a man and a woman, which are the real pleasures of opera. In response to this opinion, Mussorgsky made major revisions to the opera in 1871-2, introducing the heroine, the villainous Marina, and expanding it by about an hour. This is the core of the version known today, but it is in the 1869 original that Mussorgsky's genius and madness, ahead of its time, are most strongly expressed.There have been CDs of Gergiev and the Mariinsky Theater, and videos of Weigle and the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, and Kent Nagano also released a DVD of the Bavarian State Opera on the BelAir label in 2014. In the video, Boris is played by Aleksandr Zymbalyuk, who looks like a modern businessman in a suit and tie, and the scene in which the people protest with portraits of Prime Minister Abe and other heads of state became a hot topic.
