Claire Hammond, one of the leading young British pianists, returns with her second release on the BIS label—and her virtuosity is simply breathtaking. Titled “Études,” the album is literally a collection of practice pieces, but the programming—spanning 120 years of music from all eras and regions, and featuring a diverse range of composers—is meticulously curated and truly impressive. Etudes for piano are intended to develop finger independence, agility, and mastery of difficult techniques, and while most are challenging pieces, the composers featured here infuse them with artistry and individuality, creating a captivating world of music. Lyapnov’s three pieces are drawn from his “Etudes of Superb Technique,” showcasing a high-energy, dynamic world inherited from his mentor, Balakirev. I am captivated by the Russian flavor and melodies characteristic of the Nationalist School. The etudes by contemporary Korean female composer Jin Eun-suk were premiered in Japan by Hiroaki Oi, who described the third piece as “the most difficult piano piece in Asia.” The composer herself contributed a glowing endorsement of Hammond’s performance, which can be summed up in a single word: simply amazing. The following works by the modern Polish composer Szymanowski date from a period when he was awakening to his own unique aesthetic sensibility; while demanding exceptionally difficult technique, they reveal a penchant for the “BL” genre shared with his Symphony No. 3 and the violin piece “Myth.” Then there is Kapustin, who has many fans in Japan as well. His piano pieces are brimming with coolness derived from jazz idioms, but they are all technically challenging—his études, in particular, represent the pinnacle of difficulty.
