Melissa Aldana's third Blue Note release! A superb ballad album presenting songs rooted in Cuba's filin musical tradition with astonishing new interpretations. Filin is a vocal style popular from the 1940s to 1960s, heavily influenced by American musicians like Nat King Cole. The word "filin" derives from "feeling," and with deeply resonant performances, Aldana leads an exceptional quartet featuring Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Kash Abadey. Vocalist Cecile McLorin Salvant joins as a special guest on two tracks. The band also covers Brazilian composer Hermeto Pascoal's "Igrejinha (Little Church)" and Cartola's "Silent Rose." Chilean-born saxophonist Melissa Ardana reportedly expressed a desire to create a ballad album as long as she continued her career as a recording artist.With John Coltrane's legendary 1963 album Ballads as his North Star, Aldana saw the slow-tempo project as a means to evolve the sound he had pursued throughout his life. "I transcribe pieces by many musicians, including Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, Joe Henderson, Lester Young, Charlie Parker, and Don Bias," she explains. "For them, sound itself is a tool for expressing emotion. "Each note is a world unto itself. There is a technical aspect to playing, but there is also a mystical aspect to sound, and... even now, I don't know exactly what that is."
