Formed in 2009 around Barnabás Keremény, the Keremény Quartet is one of Hungary’s leading ensembles. Having honed their skills under such masters as András Schiff, Zoltán Kocsis, Günter Pichler, and Miklós Perényi, they won first prize at the 2011 Beijing International Chamber Music Competition, as well as second prize and the Audience Award at the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. They also received the Musica Viva Grand Prize, a special award, drawing international attention. While delving deeply into the traditional Hungarian repertoire, epitomized by Bartók, they have also established a strong reputation in the field of contemporary music, successfully premiering works by Kurtág and Steve Reich. Furthermore, a key feature of the group is its flexible lineup, in which Barnabás Keremény, Gábor Homoki, and Katalin Kokás all play both the violin and the viola at a high level, supporting a precise and agile ensemble. This album pairs Mozart’s “Dissonances,” which pushed the boundaries of the classical style with its bold harmonic progressions, with String Quartet No. 5 by his fellow Hungarian composer Bartók.
