The second installment in a song anthology featuring Mariusz Godlewski, one of Poland’s leading baritones, accompanied by period piano! In 2019, the 200th anniversary of his birth, the National Chopin Institute (NIFC) released a variety of commemorative recordings, marking the rediscovery and reappraisal of Stanisław Moniuszko (1819–1872). Even after the anniversary year has passed, the NIFC continues to expand its catalog—including the first-ever recordings of major operas performed on historical instruments—and now presents a new collection of Moniuszko’s art songs. Following his previous release (NIFCCD112), Mariusz Godlewski—one of Poland’s leading baritones, active on opera stages both in Poland and abroad, with a repertoire that includes German lieder, English Baroque music in his repertoire, who has been active on numerous opera stages in Poland and abroad. The period sound is recreated using an Érard piano built in 1849. Moniuszko’s songs draw on a diverse range of texts spanning three centuries—from the late 16th-century Polish poet Jan Kochanowski to Adam Asnik, a pioneer of the “Young Poland” literary and artistic movement that emerged at the turn of the 20th century—and are composed in a variety of styles.
