GRICE, the solo project under a pseudonym by British multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Jim Peters, releases its 2026 album on his own label, Hungersleep Records! While incorporating ambient elements as in previous works, this album minimizes the use of backing musicians to bring the warm sound of acoustic guitar-driven singer-songwriter performances and live band sounds to the forefront. Following his previous album *MORDANTLAKE*—which felt like a return to his roots as a singer-songwriter—this new release marks a return to the ambient pop/post-rock style associated with artists like NO-MAN and NOSOUND—a style that emphasizes vast soundscapes and melancholic vocal melodies. Featuring Richard Barbieri (keyboards/synths/sonics) of JAPAN and PORCUPINE TREE, Steve Jansen (sonics), who was also active in JAPAN, guitarist David Torn (guitar/loops), who is active across a wide range of genres from jazz to rock and experimental music, Theo Travis (duduk) of SOFTMACHINE and THE TANGENT, and guitarist David Torn (g/loops), who is active across a wide range of genres from jazz to rock and experimental music, as well as Luca Calabrese (trp) of ISILDURSBANE and other stellar supporting musicians. Each track possesses its own unique character, featuring the FM sounds created by Barbieri alongside the meditative performances of Travis and Calabrese’s meditative performances, unfolding a serious soundscape that spans from electronica to contemporary jazz—a style reminiscent of ISILDURSBANE’s recent work—in “Desert Bloom,” "Dumah (silence)," where you can fully appreciate the improvisational playing that makes David Torn so distinctive, making full use of feedback and loops—this is an ambitious album packed with numerous tracks that incorporate experimental techniques to further expand and renew his sound!
