Description:
This is a rare collection of art songs by Théodore Gouvy (1819–1898), a composer active in 19th-century France. Since Gouvy was born in the Saar region—which was then a disputed territory between Germany and France—he was said to belong to neither country and was therefore unable to enroll at the Paris Conservatory, which he had long aspired to attend. As a result, he studied music privately and took his time to fully develop his talent. Although Berlioz held his works in high regard, Guvi’s compositions ultimately never came into the spotlight and were eventually forgotten. While some of his sacred and orchestral works have begun to be performed in recent years, these songs remained quietly buried in a corner of music history, unnoticed by anyone. Fifteen of the songs on this album are being recorded for the first time; while the others have been recorded before, those previous recordings were not in the original key. Soprano Mee Nam is a scholar of Gwi’s works and actively promotes his compositions.
