Description:
Toscanini's summation of the Enigma Variations - an interpretation that impressed even the English. A treasured performance restored in sound of unprecedented richness. - Toscanini first conducted the Enigma Variations in 1905, six years after the work was composed. When he conducted it in London as a guest of the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1935, the conductor Landon Ronald declared that "the finest performance I had ever heard was the composer's own, but Toscanini surpassed it", and the eminent critic Ernest Newman added his own tribute - his reading enjoyed an authority beyond question. - This recording was made three months before the last concert at which Toscanini conducted the work, and thus represents the summation of his interpretation. It draws the NBC Symphony's virtuosity to its fullest extent and brings out the varied appeal of the theme and its fourteen variations. A week earlier he recorded Brahms's Fourth Symphony and a week later Respighi's Fontane di Roma, both long-admired classics of the catalogue - evidence that Toscanini and the NBC Symphony were at their peak. Apart from the Enigma Variations, the only Elgar Toscanini ever performed in his entire career was the Introduction and Allegro. - The coupling, as on the original LP, is Brahms's Variations on a Theme by Haydn. Toscanini performed the work five times during his NBC years, but this account was made purely as a studio recording, his first since the historic 1936 version with the New York Philharmonic. It is a fine performance that throws into relief the structure of a work in which harmonic change binds the variations together. Most of Toscanini's RCA recordings from 1951 onwards were made with a single condenser microphone suspended some five metres above the conductor's head, and the Enigma is counted among the most successful of them. - As with every XRCD24 reissue, this transfer was mastered by going back to the most original analogue master tape. The brilliant, full-bodied sound of Toscanini and the NBC Symphony Orchestra, captured by the celebrated team of Richard Mohr and Lewis Layton - the pair who built RCA's golden age of recording with the Living Stereo series - returns with unprecedented clarity and colour. - Notes by Manabu Matsumoto, Harris Goldsmith, Mortimer H. Frank, Minoru Okamoto and others. [Comment provided by BMG Japan]
