The 18th International Chopin Piano Competition, held in October 2021, was postponed for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, it attracted exceptionally talented musicians from around the world and generated unprecedented excitement thanks to the outstanding performances of Japanese contestants and the global online broadcast. From the competition’s live recording series (Blue Series), released by the National Institute of Frédéric Chopin (NIFC)—the competition’s organizer—the live recording of Kyohei Handa, who tied for second place with Alexander Gadzev and achieved the highest-ever ranking for a Japanese pianist since Mitsuko Uchida’s victory in 1970, is finally set for release! This live album is a comprehensive two-disc set that offers a panoramic view of the entire competition, from the first preliminary round to the finals. It features the Nocturnes and Etudes from the first preliminary round, showcasing his delicate virtuosity; the Waltzes from the second preliminary round, performed at impressively fast tempos; and the Rondo à la Mazurka, which brilliantly exemplified the “Grand” style. The third round features not only the “Funeral Sonata” and the “Heroic Polonaise,” but also his rarely heard posthumous work, the “Largo (God, Protect Poland).” In addition to diverse recitals and collaborations with orchestras, Kyohei Sorita—who leads an extremely dynamic career that includes founding his own orchestra and company, as well as running a music salon for young musicians—has established a formidable presence in Warsaw.
