An album that lets you fully savor Fialkowska’s signature three-beat rhythm Veteran Polish-Canadian pianist Janina Fialkowska takes on an intriguing album. The theme is “the waltz.” Although the waltz is a popular dance form, its history is surprisingly recent; it does not appear in the Baroque or Classical periods. Fialkowska begins with Weber’s “Invitation to the Dance” (1819), which established the prototype of the waltz, and Schubert’s waltzes—which evolved from the German Ländler—tracing the evolution of the genre over approximately a century, from its heyday in the Romantic era to Ravel’s “Waltz, Elegant and Sentimental” (1912). Such an approach is rare and truly groundbreaking. While Chopin is naturally included, another highlight is the opportunity to experience the distinct national characteristics of works like Sibelius’s “Sad Waltz” and Tchaikovsky’s “Christmas Waltz” through Fialkowska’s performances.
