Born in Brazil in 1957, Antonio Menezes studied cello under Antonio Yanigro and went on to win the 1977 ARD International Music Competition in Munich and the 1982 Tchaikovsky International Competition. He is a world-renowned cellist and a source of pride for Brazil. A member of the legendary Beaux-Arts Trio, Meneses was highly regarded by Karajan in his later years and was even called the “Emperor of the Cello.” This monumental new recording celebrates Meneses’ 65th birthday and the 40th anniversary of his victory at the Tchaikovsky Competition (as well as the 45th anniversary of his victory at the ARD Competition). This highly anticipated program combines Brahms’s two Cello Sonatas with cello arrangements of art songs adapted by Norbert Solter and David Geringsas! When it comes to Meneses’s Brahms, given his legendary recording of the Double Concerto with Mutter, Karajan, and the Berlin Philharmonic, expectations are high for the rich, mature Brahms he delivers here.
