Description:

Lebanese composer El-Khoury often depicts Lebanese landscapes in his own works. In the concert overture "Storm," chaotic natural phenomena, flashes of lightning, and dramatic storms are skillfully incorporated into the music, but never in the physical landscape of Berlioz or Richard Strauss, but rather reflecting the psychological terror El-Khoury has felt since his youth during storms. The work was commissioned by the Orchestre de Paris and premiered by Paavo Järvi in the opening concert of the 2013 season. The symphonic poem "Fragments of Space" was commissioned by Daniele Gatti and the Orchestre National de France as a contemporary work for the "Complete Beethoven Symphonies" concert. It was to be composed with the same instrumentation as Beethoven's, and was performed between the second and sixth symphonies.With "Nocturnal Poems," written to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Pierre Rampal's death, and "Love Songs," modeled after Richard Strauss's "Four Last Songs," this single disc offers a variety of works by the versatile composer El-Khoury.
