[Nike Presents an Unconventional Arrangement of the Ensemble Pieces That Enriched the Daily Life of the French King] De Lalande, the composer who served as Director of Royal Music for France’s “Sun King,” Louis XIV, following the death of Lully. To mark the 300th anniversary of his death in 2026, Nikke & Le Concert Spirituel has recorded his masterpiece in the instrumental repertoire, *Symphonies for the King’s Suppers*, in a unique arrangement. De Lalande secured a position at court in his mid-twenties and was soon entrusted with providing the music to accompany the King’s public suppers, which had become a popular form of entertainment at the Palace of Versailles. Originally performed by a large orchestra to demonstrate the absolute monarch’s dignity and refined taste, these ensemble pieces continued to grace the royal table during the subsequent reign of Louis XV, albeit in a scaled-down form. Since only excerpts by other musicians remain, and the orchestration and selection of movements are essential, this album reworks the music for a smaller ensemble in accordance with the performance practices of the Louis XV era. The ensemble, divided into two groups, features such virtuosos as Jeremy Papasergio on bassoon, Elsa Frank on oboe, and Turmo Daren on cello. The ensemble also features four theorbo players—including the veteran Massimo Moscardo and the up-and-coming Bruno Elstroffel—as well as the keyboardist Yoann Moulin, who is known for his solo work. Through a series of dynamic movements, the performance is so vibrant that you can almost sense the opulence of the king’s table—it’s simply irresistible. Interlaced with a reading of the famous letter in which Louis XIV’s sister-in-law, the Duchess of Orléans, lamented the state of the French royal household’s restrooms, the album concludes with conductor Nique’s magnificent voice performing a popular song of the era accompanied by an orchestra.
