[Two Masterpieces by Lassus, One of the Greatest Composers of the 16th Century, Performed in Mixed-Voice and Male-Voice A Cappella] This album pairs two works by Lassus—one of the most important polyphonic composers of the 16th century—in which he set to music the verses (Requiem) recited during memorial services for the deceased. Lassus hailed from the Southern Netherlands (present-day Belgium), a region that produced many talented singers and composers active in courts and religious institutions throughout Europe. He served for many years at the court of the Duke of Bavaria—one of Germany’s most powerful rulers—and left behind numerous masterpieces while making frequent visits to Italy. While there are many examples of different musical settings for the same text—such as in Masses and psalm settings—only these two works are known to be set to the text of the Requiem. Bringing together an elite ensemble of early music singers, Vox Luminis—whose successful debut performance in Japan at the “Chofu International Music Festival 2025” is still fresh in our memories—is an ensemble that typically performs with a combination of vocals and period instruments, but for this concert, they will perform these works in a strictly a cappella format, with each part sung by two to three singers. The widely performed five-part work is for mixed voices (3 Sp, 2 C-T, 2 TnI, 2 TnII, 3 Bs), while the four-part work is for male voices only (3 tenors, 3 basses I, 3 basses II, 3 basses III), presenting verses praying for the repose of the souls of the dead with a gentle yet meticulously polished interpretation. Although the “Four-Part Office” was published in Paris in 1577, this recording uses the manuscript version preserved in Augsburg, which has been transposed to the bass range. This manuscript was copied with the intention of being used in winter services in 1575, allowing listeners to fully appreciate the rich warmth of the male chorus. Naxos Japan
