The March Revolution of 1848 in Germany had a profound effect on the Schumanns, who were living in Dresden. They moved to the countryside away from the hustle and bustle of the city, where Schumann worked on several chamber works in a more relaxed environment. The works on this album were written all at once around that time, and all are richly inspired. The instrumental designation for each piece is horn, oboe, or clarinet, but this can be changed, and the pieces are sometimes played on cello or other instruments.
