Michelangelo Quartett

Description:

This album presents the works of three generations of the Cherepnin family, a Russian musical family. Nikolai Tcherepnin was born in St. Petersburg. He studied under Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and joined Sergei Diaghilev's Russian Ballet Company as a conductor from 1909 to 1914. He left a legacy of romantic works that adopted the influences of French impressionist music. Nikolai's son, Alexander, was also born in St. Petersburg. In addition to learning music from Nikolai, he was greatly influenced by those involved in the Ballets Russes, with which his father was involved. In Paris, he befriended the French Six, and later collected folk songs from Russia, Azerbaijan, Persia, and other countries. In the 1930s, he visited Asia, including Japan, to teach young composers. Alexandre's third son, Ivan, also became familiar with music at an early age.At the age of 7, he moved to Chicago when his parents took teaching positions at DePaul University, studied with Leon Kirchner at Harvard University, took lessons in Europe with Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen, and in 1972 became director of the Electronic Music Studio, Harvard University, He remained in this position until his death. This album includes a string quartet with solo soprano voice reminiscent of Schoenberg. The album is a good showcase of the changing compositional styles of the time, from the late Romanticism to the latter half of the 20th century. Naxos Japan
