Description:

Zaycik and others take a close look at women living in an Eastern European country with a history of hardship.] While Armenia has a history of ethnicity and language dating back to ancient kingdoms, it was ruled by Turkey, Persia, Russia, and other major powers in modern times, and became an independent nation again with the collapse of the Soviet Union. It is also famous as the home of Soviet-era composers such as Khachaturian and Arutyunian, and here we have Komitas, who was a contemporary of Mahler and R. Strauss and contributed greatly to the international recognition of Armenian music, as well as the longtime conductor of the Sipan-Komitas Choir in Paris, who studied under Messiaen. The program features the music of Gabrys Aprikian, who studied under Messiaen and conducted the Sipan-Comitas Chorus in Paris for many years, as well as modern Armenian music with soprano, piano, and violin. The theme of the program is "mother" through the earthy dances and songs of Komitas and the "eastern" music of Aprykian's flexible sound design. The subtleties of the sound, which depict the joys, sorrows, and sorrows of women as individuals, while approaching the social magnitude of their existence, are brought to life with the voice of Eva Zaissik, a new-generation singer who boasts an overwhelming presence on the French classical music scene. The enchanting sound of the violin of David Harutunian, a master violinist from Armenia who has inherited the performance traditions of the East and West under the tutelage of Kantorov and Belkin, will also leave you in awe.
