Zaycik and others take a close look at women living in an Eastern European country with a history of hardship.] While Armenia has a history of ethnicity and language dating back to ancient kingdoms, it was ruled by Turkey, Persia, Russia, and other major powers in modern times, and became an independent nation again with the collapse of the Soviet Union. It is also famous as the home of Soviet-era composers such as Khachaturian and Arutyunian, and here we have Komitas, who was a contemporary of Mahler and R. Strauss and contributed greatly to the international recognition of Armenian music, as well as the longtime conductor of the Sipan-Komitas Choir in Paris, who studied under Messiaen. The program features the music of Gabrys Aprikian, who studied under Messiaen and conducted the Sipan-Comitas Chorus in Paris for many years, as well as modern Armenian music with soprano, piano, and violin.
