Patrizia Kopatchinskaja is gaining a growing number of fans around the world for her extraordinary musicality and her unparalleled sense of style, even in the world of violins, where there are many exceptional violinists from all ages and cultures. Born and raised in the former Soviet Republic of Moldavia in the northeastern part of the Balkan Peninsula, where the Romanian language was spelled with Cyrillic letters, she emerged in German-speaking countries, and now she has come to confront her diverse roots and weave a rich selection of music from her eastern European roots. The program is a dense one of war and despair, death and hope, centered on three works by Bach, "John Passion" and Martin, "Double Altarpiece," and Hartmann, "Funeral Concerto," all of which are as rich as each other. This is a reliable collaboration with the Camerata Bern, a long-established and talented group that continues to rejuvenate. The highlight of the first half, Hartmann, is an ambitious work written by the Munich-born composer out of despair over Nazi Germany's invasion of the Czech Republic and Poland in 1939. Kopatchinskaja's performance of Hartmann's work is a must-see.The commentary mentions that the program was based on a live performance by candlelight in a church in Bern, which has existed since the Middle Ages, and that the works of Swiss composer Martin were inevitably chosen because of this relationship. The recitations in Hebrew, Polish, and Russian, which are interspersed throughout the album, add a unique atmosphere to the presence of the pieces, even though they are only 40 seconds long each.
