Description:

A little-known requiem by Donizetti, one of the leading opera composers of the early 19th century. The work was commissioned by Ricordi when his close friend Bellini, who was born at about the same time as Donizetti and inspired each other as good rivals, passed away at the young age of 33. Donizetti, however, started the work but eventually died without completing it. It was not until 1870, 22 years after Donizetti's death, that the Requiem, which was left without "Sanctus" and "Agnus Dei," was performed for the first time. Although unfinished, it is a charming work with beautiful melodies scattered throughout, reminiscent of Donizetti's operas. The recording was made at the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, where Donizetti is buried, as was the case at the first performance. The passionate singing of the singers is also a highlight of the recording. Naxos Japan
