Richard Itter (1928-2014), founder of the Lyrita Recorded Edition label, actively recorded British music and contributed to the discovery of unknown composers. This is the fourth in a series of CDs from his valuable collection of BBC broadcasts, which he has been air-checking since 1952 using the most advanced professional equipment available at the time. Montoux is acknowledged by all as a specialist in his native French music, but he also had a deep affection for Brahms, and it is a pleasure to include his Symphony No. 3, which has never been officially recorded, as well as two concertos that have never appeared on CD before. Franck's "Symphonic Variations" was performed with his longtime friend Casadoche, and this first live appearance is the earliest recording of Montoux conducting this work. Debussy's "Images" and Chausson's "Symphony" are Montoux's only live recordings.As a bonus, there is a recording of Haydn No. 102 conducted by Munsch, also a French conductor. This is the only remaining recording of him conducting this work, making it extremely valuable, and the performance is aggressive and superb. The source material was taken from magnetic tapes and acetate discs that Mr. Itter edited and re-recorded. The recording has been carefully remastered and is in very good condition for an aircheck from the 1950s. Naxos Japan
