Description:

Includes Noriyuki Makihara's "Viola Sings," a diverse selection of Brahms, Puccini, Hindemith, Piazzolla, etc. Shoko Suda is one of Japan's best viola singers and a rare violist with a wide variety of colorful tones. This CD is as varied as a concert itself, and is designed to bring out the full range of the viola's unique characteristics. The pieces are arranged in the order of the composer's birth, with a wide variety of country of origin. The album begins with songs by Brahms and continues with opera arias by Puccini. At the center of the program is Hindemith's viola sonata. Hindemith was a virtuoso violist and left many works for the viola, but the viola sonata is a relatively early work that retains romantic elements. He said, "It's the work of someone who knew the viola inside and out, so it's written in such a way that the fingers line up and there's no stress." Moreover, Suda is playing the viola and bow that Hindemith actually used, and Suda says that when he plays this sonata, "the instrument and bow guide my playing.Piazzolla's "Two Pieces" was written in 1949 (at the age of 28), and moreover, it is the only original work for viola composed by Piazzolla. The album ends with "Viola Sings" by Noriyuki Makihara, a singer-songwriter who represents Japan with his beautiful melodies and gentle messages. Viola Sings" was written, composed, and sung by Makihara for NHK TV's "Minna no Uta" (Songs for Everyone). The viola was thought to have little presence in the orchestra, but after playing together with the other instruments, it was discovered that it actually plays a role in supporting and utilizing the other instruments. Through this, the song sings the message that "it is a very happy thing for a person to be able to support others, to shine, and to be able to be for someone else. Viola Sings" is also the title of this CD, which also coincides with Suda's way of life. <Sachiko Suda began studying at Toho Gakuen Music School for Children at the age of 4, and started playing the violin at the age of 6. After graduating from Toho Gakuen School of Music at the top of her class in 1998, she completed her studies as a special researcher in the "Soloist Course" at the Music Research Institute of Senzoku Gakuen College. She has won first prizes in all four competitions, including the 23rd Premio Vittorio Gui International Competition and the 2nd Awaji Island Shizuka Hall Viola Competition. She has studied violin with Takahiro Murotani and viola and chamber music with Nobuo Okada. Currently, he is a Principal of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, a Principal Guest Violist of the Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra, and a part-time lecturer at Senzoku Gakuen University. He has participated in the Seiji Ozawa Opera Project and the Miyazaki Music Festival, as well as the Imperial Palace Concerts, and has made frequent appearances with the Mito Chamber Orchestra, Kamakura Arts Center Zorisden, and the Saito Kinen Orchestra. He has also made numerous guest appearances as a principal player in orchestras throughout Japan, and is active in a wide range of fields including solo, chamber, and orchestral music. 2008 saw him perform chamber music with Myung-Whun Chung in the "Bridge of Friendship Concert," making him one of the most trusted artists in the field.
