While some pieces feature the recorder playing the melody with the Dugong Boys handling the other parts, this “Concert” version—based on a transcription by Takuya Nemoto (who is also a composer) and perfected through repeated deliberation and trial and error by the three performers—is a marvelous achievement made possible only by the exceptional skill of each musician and unique to this trio. The arrangement—which includes moments in each variation that surprise the listener with a “Oh, so that’s how it goes!”—keeps the audience on the edge of their seats, wondering what will come next.
