NHK’s Taiga Drama series first aired in 1963. The composers of its theme music over the years have captured the turbulent lives of the characters and the energy of the eras in which they lived within the limited timeframe of just two and a half minutes. This live recording captures the “Taiga Drama Concert” performed in 2026 by the NHK Symphony Orchestra—the original ensemble that has performed nearly every theme since the series began. In 2026, the concert featured the acclaimed young conductor Nodoka Okisawa and boasted an exceptionally spectacular lineup, including collaborations with traditional Japanese instruments and a choir. The latest work, "The Toyotomi Brothers!," was performed in a special concert version that omitted the use of unique instruments. Additionally, "Minamoto no Yoshitsune," composed by Toru Takemitsu—who passed away 30 years ago this year—was revived for the first time in 60 years through a unique reconstruction by Koichi Sakata, the composer of "Kasuga no Tsubone." This was made possible because only fragmentary sketches of the score remained. Furthermore, in addition to the drama "Yumechiyo Nikki," the album includes, as a bonus track, the traditional classical music associated with the "Taiga" series that was performed during the second half of the concert.
