Previously releasing music on Skam and Blueprint, James Ruskin and Mark Brooms the Fear Ratio project made the jump to Tresor with their fourth album, 2022s Slinky. Exploring the duos hip-hop influences more than their previous efforts, the release features two guest appearances by U.K. rapper King Kashmere, whose verses here are far more politically charged than the sinister, Dr. Octagon-esque fantasies of his work as part of Strange U. "Spinning Globe" is particularly sharp, condemning police and urging listeners to be aware and take control in a rapidly changing world. The album has a few midtempo lulls that easily fade into the background, but there are also vibrant highlights like "STMS," filled with inventive beat patterns and flickering pinprick melodies, and "Effem," which sounds far more joyous and giddy than the usual output by post-Autechre electronic acts. ~ Paul Simpson
