Description:

The latest 2018 release from the genius Rousset, French Baroque Opera! Les Talents Reliques, led by Christophe Rousset, one of the greats of the "Alceste" French Baroque, which has been a success since its release. Following Rameau: "Zeiss" (recorded July 2014, AP109), Lully: "Armide" (recorded December 2015, AP135), and Rameau: Pygmalion (recorded January 2017, AP155), the latest Baroque Opera 2018 disc is Lully's Alceste. This is the second musical tragedy by Lully and writer Quinault, following Cadmus and Hermione, which was premiered at the Royal Academy of Music in Paris on January 19, 1674, and was highly praised by the king and the court, but jealous of Lully, who was then beginning to gain power, the musicians tried to discredit it However, the musicians were jealous of Lully, who was then rising to power, and tried to ruin the work's reputation.Despite this, the production was staged again in July 1674 as part of the celebrations, and it continued to be performed successfully in other French cities. The use of the chorus is very effective and carries the story along beautifully. The orchestral music, which describes various scenes, is also very brief and full. The setting is the Tuileries Palace and Gardens. The wedding of King Admet and Alceste. Everyone is celebrating the marriage except Alcide, who is in love with Alcest. King Admet is mortally wounded, and he is told that his death can be averted if someone offers his life for the king's. Alcest, seeing that no one is willing to die, says that he will not die. Seeing that no one is willing to die, Alcest offers himself as a sacrifice. Alcedo promises to get Alcest back if he and Alcesto are willing to be united, and they go to Hades. In Hades, Alcedo persuades Pluto to get Alcesto back and return to this world.Seeing Alceste regain his life, however, and continuing to adore King Admet, Alceste backs down, King Admet and Alceste are married anew, and the Musees celebrate the marriage and Alceste's victory, and the curtain comes down.
