Description:

2020 Beethoven Year Berlin Academy of Ancient Music Recordings of the Countryside! Recorded by a small number of members without a conductor! In this Beethoven Year, Harmoniumundi presents a recording of symphonic works by the Berlin Academy of Ancient Music! This time it is No. 6 "Rural". The coupling of "Rural" is Knecht's great symphony written about 30 years earlier. This music also describes nature, and the titles of the movements are similar and intriguing. For this recording, the members of the Berlin Academy of Ancient Music visited all the places (so-called halls) where Beethoven had performed in Vienna and studied their acoustics. In the end, they decided on the ideal acoustics of a small hall, which is why the number of string players was reduced. Although there are no detailed records or paintings of the concerts conducted by Beethoven himself, we have inferred the composition of the orchestra at that time from records of the number of orchestra members in the theater directories of the time. As for the layout, strings were placed on the left side of the stage as seen from the audience, wind instruments on the right, and the double basses were placed slightly behind the trombones, trumpets and timpani. This made it easier for the members to keep in touch with each other and to consider the next move of each section as if they were playing chamber music without a conductor. Knecht's work is from 1780 (in G major). It is a beautiful world of rural world from the beginning. In the second movement, a storm is gradually approaching, which is expressed by anxiously repeated modulations. The description of the storm in the third movement is in the gorgeous key of D major, reminiscent of an operatic overture, and is very interesting and different from Beethoven's. The last movement is a variation on the theme of the storm. The final movement takes the form of a variation, but is a refreshing chorale-like piece. The titles of the movements of Beethoven's Sixth Symphony and Knecht's are similar. In fact, although no reliable documentation has survived, it is likely that Beethoven was aware of Knecht's work, as his early works were published by the same publisher as Knecht's. There have been attempts to imitate nature in music since that time, and Knecht's works may have been innovative at the time of 1780.However, when we compare the two, even though there is a gap of less than 30 years between the first performance of "The Countryside" in December 1808 and the first performance of "Beethoven's Countryside," we are reminded once again of the greatness and innovation of the great musician Beethoven. In Beethoven's last movement, the wind instruments are heard prominently thanks to the balance adopted by the Berlin Old Music ensemble, and one gets the feeling that the image of "Denen" as we have known it up to now is being overturned.
