As expected, or rather, far beyond expectations, Lugansky's Debussy Debussy Year 2018, Harmonia Mundi has a special release in store for you. One of the featured discs is a piano album by Lugansky. Unlike his friend Melnikov, he creates a brilliant sound world using a Steinway. Lugansky has been known for his convincing performances of Rachmaninoff, Liszt, and Chopin with unparalleled precision and precisely calculated designs. I am curious to hear how Lugansky reproduces Debussy. One of Lugansky's charms is his brilliant, ringing sound. It is one of the most important points of Debussy, who was a magician of sound, and I was surprised at how it reminded me a little of Russian music, such as "Isle of Joy. Debussy worshipped Mussorgsky and was strongly influenced by him, but "Island of Delight" reminds us that it is of Mussorgskyian origin.On the other hand, the clean, sparkling beauty of "Arabesque No. 1" and "Moonlight" from "Suite Bergamasque" are also superb. In recent years, there has been much interest in the connection between Debussy's music and Japonisme, and this performance is a valuable piece that suggests the significant involvement of Russian music in Debussy's art.
